Water Treatment
Outdoor distribution, intake, and process valves exposed to rain and washdown.
IP67 · Dust-tight · Temporary Immersion
IP67 worm gear operators are dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion in water to 1 metre for 30 minutes, per IEC 60529. They suit outdoor pipelines, valve pits, loading racks, and water treatment plants where rain, dust, and occasional flooding would damage an unsealed operator. Sealed housings retain the self-locking worm action and ISO 5211 mounting.

Application Foundation
An IP67 worm gear operator carries an ingress protection rating of 6 for dust and 7 for water under IEC 60529 — fully dust-tight and able to withstand temporary immersion in water to 1 metre depth for 30 minutes. This protects the worm set, bearings, and lubrication from rain, windblown dust, washdown, and short-term flooding in outdoor and exposed installations.
IP67 operators use O-ring housing joints, sealed stem glands, and coated exterior surfaces to keep moisture out. They retain the self-locking worm action and ISO 5211 mounting of the standard range. Per-model torque and dimensional specifications are confirmed per order — declare the valve torque, environment, and any immersion exposure when requesting a quote.
Engineering Data
| IP Code | Dust Protection (1st digit) | Water Protection (2nd digit) | Typical Valve Operator Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| IP65 | 6 — dust-tight | 5 — water jets from any direction | Washdown areas, sheltered outdoor |
| IP67 | 6 — dust-tight | 7 — temporary immersion to 1 m, 30 min | Outdoor pits, loading racks, exposed pipe bridges |
| IP68 | 6 — dust-tight | 8 — continuous immersion at stated depth/pressure | Wet wells, sewage lift stations, submerged tank-bottom valves |
Definitions per IEC 60529 (the international standard for IP enclosure ratings). The depth and duration for IP68 are manufacturer-declared against the project test protocol — declare immersion depth, media, and temperature when requesting a quote. | ISO 5211 Flange | Typical Valve Size Band* | Common Valve Families | Matson Models Offering This Flange |
|---|---|---|---|
| F05 | Small bore | Ball, plug, small butterfly | M07 |
| F07 | Small–medium bore | Butterfly (wafer), ball, plug | M07, M10 |
| F10 | Medium bore | Butterfly, ball, plug | M07, M10, M12 |
| F12 | Medium bore | Butterfly (lug), ball, gate top-work | M12, M14 |
| F14 | Medium–large bore | Butterfly, trunnion ball, gate | M12, M14, M14A, M15 |
| F16 | Large bore | Butterfly (double flange / AWWA), ball, gate | M14, M14A, M15, M16 |
| F25 | Heavy / large bore | Large AWWA butterfly, high-pressure ball, large gate | M16 |
*Valve size band is indicative only — actual flange depends on the valve manufacturer's top-work, stem, and torque rating. Flange and Matson single-stage model data are from the Matson worm gearbox catalog (M07–M16, 200–4,400 N·m). Two-stage and electric-actuator series extend up to 160,000 N·m. Confirm the exact flange against your valve datasheet.

Send your valve tag, bore, pressure class, environment class, and required output torque and our engineers return a model recommendation with the matching ISO 5211 / ISO 5210 interface.

Operation
IP67 is an ingress protection code from IEC 60529. The first digit, 6, means the operator is completely dust-tight. The second digit, 7, means it withstands temporary immersion in water to 1 metre for 30 minutes without harmful ingress. For valve operators this covers rain, washdown, windblown grit, and short-term flooding of pits and bunds.
IP67 is not rated for continuous submersion — that requires IP68. Where a valve sits in a wet well, sump, or tank bottom that floods for extended periods, specify an IP68 operator instead. For exposed outdoor pipelines, valve pits, and loading racks that see rain and occasional flooding, IP67 is the appropriate rating.

Common Questions
An IP67 operator withstands temporary immersion in water to 1 metre depth for 30 minutes, per IEC 60529 — enough for short-term flooding of a valve pit or bund. It is not rated for continuous submersion. For valves that sit in a wet well, sump, or tank that stays flooded, specify an IP68 operator designed for continuous immersion.
IP67 is dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion to 1 metre for 30 minutes, but it is not unconditionally waterproof. Prolonged submersion, high-pressure jets beyond the test, or seal degradation can allow ingress. For continuous underwater service choose IP68; for outdoor rain, washdown, and brief flooding, IP67 provides the right protection.
Both ratings are dust-tight (first digit 6). IP67 withstands temporary immersion to 1 metre for 30 minutes; IP68 withstands continuous immersion at a manufacturer-declared depth and duration. Choose IP67 for outdoor and occasionally flooded installations, and IP68 for valves that operate permanently submerged, such as in wet wells and tank bottoms.
IP67 worm gear operators are used outdoors and in exposed industrial settings — pipeline isolation valves, valve pits, loading racks, water treatment plants, and municipal chambers. They handle rain, dust, washdown, and short-term flooding. For permanently submerged valves, an IP68 operator is specified instead.
Yes. Sealing the housing to IP67 does not change the worm-and-wheel mechanism, so the operator remains self-locking and holds the valve at any position without a separate brake. The sealing protects the gear set and lubrication; the torque multiplication and ISO 5211 mounting are unchanged from the standard range.
