Butterfly Valve · Double Flange
Double-flange butterfly valves carry flanges on both ends of a rigid body, giving the disc support and stiffness needed for higher differential pressure and large-diameter transmission mains. Worm gear operators provide the multiplied, self-locking torque these large valves require, with ISO 5211 interfaces and actuator-ready bases for SCADA upgrades.

Application Foundation
A double-flange butterfly valve gear operator supplies the high, self-locking torque required by large rigid-body valves on water transmission and long-span mains. The reinforced double-flange body resists higher differential pressure, so break torque can reach into the thousands of newton-metres and the operator must deliver consistent input across the 90° stroke without back-driving.
Size the operator from the valve break-to-open torque at full differential pressure with a documented safety factor, then match the ISO 5211 flange — commonly F14 to F25 on large bodies. Matson single-stage models M14A–M16 (2,500–4,400 N·m) cover much of this range; two-stage heavy-duty units extend further for the largest mains.

*Valve size band is indicative only — actual flange depends on the valve manufacturer's top-work, stem, and torque rating. Flange options and Matson single-stage model data are from the Matson worm gearbox catalog (M07–M16, 200–4,400 N·m). Two-stage and electric-actuator series extend up to 160,000 N·m. Confirm the exact flange against your valve datasheet.
| Variant | Actuation | Typical Torque Driver | Mounting Interface |
|---|---|---|---|
| Double flange | Quarter-turn 90° | High ΔP + large disc area | ISO 5211 F14–F25 |
| Large double flange | Quarter-turn (geared) | DN300+ transmission duty | ISO 5211 F16–F25 |
General selection guidance by torque demand and top-flange interface. Match the required break-to-open torque (with safety factor) and the valve top-work flange to a Matson model; exact model and dimensions are confirmed against your valve datasheet — request a datasheet.
Per-model specifications (dimensions, weights, drive bushing details): available on request — request a datasheet. Send your valve tag, bore, pressure class, and required output torque and our engineers return a model recommendation with the matching ISO 5211 interface.

Common Questions
A double-flange butterfly valve has flanged connections on both ends of a rigid body, unlike wafer or lug valves. The double-flange design adds stiffness and disc support for higher differential pressure and large-diameter transmission service, where a worm gear operator supplies the multiplied, self-locking torque needed.
Double-flange butterfly valves are typically large bore and handle high differential pressure, so break-to-open torque exceeds what a hand lever can deliver. A worm gear operator multiplies torque, holds the disc without back-driving, and provides an ISO 5211 base for future electric actuation.
Large double-flange butterfly valves commonly use ISO 5211 F16 to F25 top flanges, matched to the higher torque and larger stem. The exact flange depends on the valve top-work and break-to-open torque; confirm against the valve datasheet and request a datasheet for the operator interface.
A butterfly valve operates by rotating its disc 90° within the bore between open (parallel to flow) and closed (perpendicular). On large double-flange valves a worm gear operator turns the stem through this travel with self-locking, controlled input from a handwheel or actuator.
Match the operator to the valve break-to-open torque at full differential pressure and the ISO 5211 flange (often F14–F25). Matson models M14A–M16 (2,500–4,400 N·m) cover much of the range, with two-stage units for the largest mains. Send your valve datasheet for sizing.
