Chemical Processing
Acid and corrosive isolation with SS316 and PTFE sealing.
Plug Valve · Quarter-turn
Plug valves provide tight quarter-turn shutoff with a tapered or cylindrical plug, favoured for corrosive chemical and dirty-service isolation where lubricated or sleeved plugs resist seizing. Worm gear operators add the multiplied, self-locking torque needed to rotate the plug 90° smoothly against seat friction in process and utility systems.

Application Foundation
A plug valve gear operator rotates a tapered or cylindrical plug 90° between open and closed while holding position through a self-locking worm set. Plug valves seal across the full plug face, so break torque can be high — especially on lubricated, sleeved, or lined plugs in corrosive service — and a gear operator lets one person actuate the valve smoothly without shock loading the plug or stem.
Size the operator from the plug-valve break and run torque with a safety factor, then match the ISO 5211 flange and stem. Chemical and corrosive duties commonly need PTFE stem seals and SS316 or epoxy-coated housings. Matson single-stage models M07–M16 (200–4,400 N·m) cover the common plug-valve torque range.
Engineering Data
| ISO 5211 Flange | Typical Valve Size Band* | Common Valve Families | Matson Models Offering This Flange |
|---|---|---|---|
| F05 | Small bore | Ball, plug, small butterfly | M07 |
| F07 | Small–medium bore | Butterfly (wafer), ball, plug | M07, M10 |
| F10 | Medium bore | Butterfly, ball, plug | M07, M10, M12 |
| F12 | Medium bore | Butterfly (lug), ball, gate top-work | M12, M14 |
| F14 | Medium–large bore | Butterfly, trunnion ball, gate | M12, M14, M14A, M15 |
| F16 | Large bore | Butterfly (double flange / AWWA), ball, gate | M14, M14A, M15, M16 |
| F25 | Heavy / large bore | Large AWWA butterfly, high-pressure ball, large gate | M16 |
*Valve size band is indicative only — actual flange depends on the valve manufacturer's top-work, stem, and torque rating. Flange options and Matson single-stage model data are from the Matson worm gearbox catalog (M07–M16, 200–4,400 N·m). Two-stage and electric-actuator series extend up to 160,000 N·m. Confirm the exact flange against your valve datasheet.
| Variant | Actuation | Typical Torque Driver | Mounting Interface |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lubricated plug | Quarter-turn 90° | High seat friction; break torque | ISO 5211 F07–F16 |
| Sleeved / lined plug | Quarter-turn 90° | Sleeve friction; corrosive duty | ISO 5211 F10–F16 |
General selection guidance by torque demand and top-flange interface. Match the required break-to-open torque (with safety factor) and the valve top-work flange to a Matson model; exact model and dimensions are confirmed against your valve datasheet — request a datasheet.
Per-model specifications (dimensions, weights, drive bushing details): available on request — request a datasheet. Send your valve tag, bore, pressure class, and required output torque and our engineers return a model recommendation with the matching ISO 5211 interface.

Operation
Plug valve worm gear operators deliver smooth 90° rotation against the high seat friction of tapered and sleeved plugs, then hold the plug closed without back-driving. PTFE stem seals and corrosion-resistant coatings protect the operator in acid and chemical service. Declutchable and actuator-ready bases support automation where chemical batch plants add remote control, and full break/run torque is verified on calibrated benches before shipment.

Common Questions
A gear-operated plug valve uses a worm gear operator to rotate the tapered or cylindrical plug 90°. The worm set multiplies torque to overcome the high seat friction of plug valves and holds the plug closed without back-driving, letting one operator actuate larger or higher-torque valves safely.
Plug valves seal across the full tapered or cylindrical plug face, so seat contact area and friction are larger than a ball valve of similar bore. Lubricated, sleeved, or lined plugs add further friction. This raises break torque, which is why medium and large plug valves use worm gear operators rather than hand levers.
A gear-operated valve uses a gearbox between the handwheel and stem to multiply torque and hold position. On plug valves a worm gear operator provides smooth 90° rotation against high seat friction and an ISO 5211 base for future actuation.
The ISO 5211 flange depends on the plug valve top-work and torque, commonly F07–F16. Match the bolt circle, stem bore, and break torque to the operator. Send the valve datasheet and we confirm the flange and recommend an adapter if the pattern is non-standard.
For corrosive and chemical plug-valve duty, specify PTFE stem seals with SS304/316 or epoxy-coated housings to resist acid attack. Confirm the process fluid, temperature, and environment so the correct sealing and coating system is applied to the operator.
